As a result, I discovered more than 100 new materials, including Sogabe's handwritten notes. However, due to a shortage of materials there are some periods of his career history for which specific details have not been ascertained accurately.Īccordingly, I researched materials in the collection of Amano Kongo Temple, where Sogabe served as chief priest during the period in which he was active as the originator of the Kongo-school chants. In my master's thesis, I studied descriptions concerning Sogabe in sources such as materials not covered by previous studies and various religious newspapers, elucidating his career history and the content of his activities. While a number of previous studies have concerned Sogabe, they did not include in their subject matter all materials from his time. This paper concerns Sogabe Shunno (1873–1949), known as the originator of the Kongo-school chants.
